Movies that might remotely resemble Groundhog Day, only not about the same events (repeating the same things), but about the same characters and how the thread of life can change if you change even one element of your destiny (an act, a choice, even the purchase of something). It’s not really about an alternate reality, but about a changing reality (altered).
In the Storm (Durante la tormenta) 2018
Genre: thriller, drama, fantasy, detective
A happy woman, Vera, with her husband and little daughter, moves into a new house. And there, during a violent thunderstorm, the temporal layers shift, as a result of which the woman tries to save from death a boy who lived here 25 years ago. But this act of goodwill leads Vera to find herself in an altered present in which her spouse does not know her and her own daughter is not born.
From me: The movie looked a little boring at first, but it gained momentum closer to the middle. And as a whole became not only suspenseful, but also intriguing. But in my opinion. The picture turned out purely female.
The Butterfly Effect 2003
Genre: fantasy, thriller, drama
The young boy Evan has inherited a strange disease from his psychotic father, now locked up in a home for the criminally insane – he can’t remember some episodes of his life, and at these moments some rather strange, if not terrible, events took place. Growing up and going to college, Evan makes a surprising discovery. By reading the diaries he wrote as a child on the doctor’s advice, Evan can go back to his childhood and change the future with his actions.
From me: A damn fascinating movie that is the bomb. I could write a lot of praise about it, but I think a lot of people are familiar with this picture and maybe even its sequels.
Radio Wave (Frequency) 2000
Genre: thriller, sci-fi, drama, crime
Police officer John Sullivan accidentally contacts his late father, firefighter Frank Sullivan, who died while fighting a fire many years ago, over an amateur radio station.
From me: This detective, with a dash of sci-fi and thriller, just keeps the viewer entertained and enthralled with the idea of getting his father back. But it is surprisingly hard to find it, and it is only shown on TV at night. But I still recommend you to watch it.
Back to the Future 1985
Genre: science fiction, comedy, adventure
Teenager Marty, with the help of a time machine built by his friend Professor Doc Brown, gets from the 80’s to the far 50’s. There he meets his future parents, still teenagers, and a professor friend, very young. And accidentally changes his parents’ past in a way that could lead to his and his brother’s and sister’s disappearance.
From me: A cult movie that, in my opinion, only lazy people haven’t seen. I think a lot of people know the basic principles of non-interference with the past because of it.
When We First Met 2018
Genre: comedy
Noah was lucky enough to meet the perfect girl and spend the perfect night with her. But after that, he was labeled “just a friend,” and it wasn’t until long three years later that the guy gets a chance to figure out where he went wrong. Traveling back in time, Noah relives an unforgettable date all over again, hoping for a different ending.
From me: The comedy is weak, of course, but funny in places. It’s not Groundhog Day, but I’d say it’s a movie about a time machine, except that it’s about one man who changes his future to be together with the one he thinks is the love of his life.
11.22.63 (mini-series) 2016
Genre: sci-fi, thriller, drama, detective
An English teacher goes back in time to prevent the assassination of JFK, but ends up becoming deeply attached to the life he did in a bygone era.
From me: The series is based on the work of Stephen King, which has already made many people fall in love with it. But then again, more often than not, after reading the original, of course, the pictures don’t seem the same (and that’s okay). The mini-series is decent, but not exactly the same as the book, and that’s probably the beauty of it. This made it no less exciting and interesting (how will it all end, and where will it all lead to in the end?).
The Lake House 2006
Genre: fantasy, drama, melodrama
After breaking up with her boyfriend, Kate Forster decides to move out of her rented house to make a fresh start and be closer to work at the same time. She leaves a letter in the mailbox for the next tenant, explaining to him some of the nuances. The new tenant turns out to be Alex Wyler, a lonely architect whose father built this beautiful house. He reads the message, but can’t understand why what Kate describes doesn’t match reality. This prompts Alex to write back.
From me: An insanely romantic melodramatic movie. In which it doesn’t seem to explicitly change reality, but at the end of the movie it’s immediately apparent that things have changed. For those who are crazy about snotty melodramas I recommend for viewing.
